Sunday 15th September
Obidos was our objective for the day, just 14k away, a traffic free medieval town famous for it’s chocolate and cherry liqueur, a tempting concoction too hard to resist called ginja. The liqueur is served up in a chocolate cup, a most enjoyable hit.

Tonight we’ve decided on some wild camping south of Peniche at Praia de Consolacao not far from the world surfing venue of Supertubos.

Chasing waves down the coast via Santa Cruz where religious icons are replaced with surfing icons to Ericeira where the surfing culture is marketed on an industrial scale, from giant bill-boards, to warehouse surf shops complete with cafe bars and yo sushi surfboard conveyer, this place is Portugal’s surf city.

It even has a specialised campsite housing one of the many surf schools in town.

Ericeira old harbour area has been gentrified into an upmarket sea- foodie destination.   The downside here is that the water temperature has an icy chill (no gulf stream here) plus a continuous chilly north wind makes beach going a hard core activity, however just a few miles inland from the coast the climate is markedly warmer.
